Privacy and Security Statement - Watching Them, Watching Us

Privacy Statements seem to be en vogue, so here is ours:

We will make every effort not to disclose any personal data revealed to us by visiting this website, or through any other form of contact with us, such as email or snail mail, to any third parties. Use an anonymous remailer or a pseudonym or use a free anonymous encrypted Hushmail account, if you like, so long as you do not try to spam us, as we will complain to your ISP and their upstream ISP and have your account cancelled, as well as the website of any products that you are trying to profit from. (after having determined if you are just trying to cause trouble for some innocent party)

You would be well advised to check exactly what your web browser (especially corporate desktop build customised ones or Linux desktops which can betray information in the HTTP_USER_AGENT variable), Internet Service Provider allocated IP address (especially if you have a static IP address which can often betray your name and address and phone number through a WHOIS query), ISP or corporate or institutional proxy servers (especially the HTTP_VIA and HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR environnment variables) are betraying about you, each and every time you connect to a web page. You will see some of these environment variables displayed at the bottom of our home page - if you see your real IP address or the name of your company or organisation there, then you should worry.

Our main website does not use cookies, although our Moveable Type weblog does use a session cookie now and then which you are welcome to block or ignore.

We do not trust ActiveX or Java or Shockwave or Flash or RealMedia or Windows Media Player etc. - use these at your own risk, and only if you have updated your system with the latest security patches, anti-virus and personal firewall software.

We will, of course, cooperate fully with requests for information by the United Kingdom authorities, provided that they have a warrant under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, signed by the Home Secretary, and registered with the Interception Commissioner.

Our computer systems are protected by the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and also require a warrant for access, with proper authorisation under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.

We are not a Communications Service Provider and we will not Retain your Communications Data i.e. our webserver access logs under either the Voluntary or the forthcoming Mandatory Data Retention Scheme under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001.

Of course all material submitted to us is part of an ongoing performance art work, and is therefore also protected by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1998, and we reserve the right to apply for an Anton Pillar order in the High Court to seize your computers to search for copyright infringing material (only joking ... or are we ?)

Our PGP encryption key passphrases are so difficult to remember that there is every chance that we genuinely won't be able to remember them under duress, so please do not reach for Rubber Hoses or Electric Cattle Prods.

if you find that our website is being blocked by CensorWare software or proxy servers, please let us know, so that we can institute the appropriate action, (we reserve the right to sue for libel if our website is incorrectly blocked).
